We are once again supporting a not-for-profit organisation with their current EOFY fundraising campaign. They didn’t run a campaign last year and cancelled a number of other fundraising activities because of the COVID pandemic. So many charities would have done the same. The campaign includes an EDM, some personal emails and follow up phone calls. It is not easy to ask people for money, even when the causes are so worthy of support.
Donors often give to more than one cause, and a large number of my current conversations end something like this, “Thanks for your call, and the update and information, it’s such an important cause but I already support a number of other organisations. I’m sorry I can’t do more this year.”
I’m not sorry. I thank them for their time, and for their generosity, no matter the recipient. It’s just vital that people give!
Find an organisation that means something to you, whose message speaks to you, whose work inspires you, support a cause that’s close to your heart. Do your research, make sure they’re legitimate and ensure your donation is tax deductible.
Why should you give? Because you can – and the vast majority of us can, and we are lucky to be in a position where we can help.
Giving to charity will make you feel good. Many people say they feel morally obligated to help others if they can, that’s because it strengthens our personal values. Lead by example and inspire those around you, whether you’re introducing your children to the importance of generosity or encouraging others to offer support and make a positive impact too.
You don’t have to give a lot, just donate what you can manage, and it doesn’t have to be money. It can be time, goods, advice, expertise. Just give!
Every donation, no matter the level, makes an impact and assists organisations that are supporting those in need.
There are so many great quotes about giving, but our client is particularly fond of Winston Churchill’s… “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”
Please, give what you can at this time of year when so many causes are in need of support!
